Saw this candle holder today and the history of the courting candle.

“When a suitor arrived, the candle was lit and the height adjusted to the quality of the suitor. Her father could turn the peg to adjust the candle height, depending on his approval of the suitor. When the candle burned down, the suitor was expected to leave!”
